Top 10 websites in the world

Here is a list of top ten most popular and most visited websites in the world. This list is provided based on the traffic statistics by the web information company Alexa. As you know, the competition between the sites is immense when it comes to the traffic metrics and the ranking of the sites based on the number of visitors vary periodically.The below list is updated on November, 2012.

1.Google

Google takes the top position in the list with more than 1 billion unique visitors per month. Google is a search engine which was started in 1996. It became more popular due to its page-rank mechanism overcoming its rival Yahoo.

2.Facebook

Facebook takes the second position with 1 billion members worldwide. Facebook is a social networking site which was started in 2004. Being open only to the Harvard college students initially, Facebook was then opened to everyone above age 13 in September, 2006.

3.YouTube

YouTube is a video sharing website which has over 800 million unique visitors per month. YouTube was launched in 2005 and it became more popular after it was acquired by Google in October, 2006. Around four billion videos are being streamed by YouTube everyday and about 60 hours of videos are uploaded to YouTube every minute.

Yahoo is also a search engine which was started in 1994 and has around 500 million unique visitors per month. Yahoo was so successful and dominant in web search before its close rival Google overcame its pitfalls and overcame Yahoo's dominance.

Baidu is a Chinese web search engine which was started in the year 2000 and serves to roughly 500 million unique visitors per month. Most of the web traffic for Baidu is from Chinese people as it is based on China and offers most of its services in Chinese.

Wikipedia is an online Encyclopedia which was launched in 2001. It has around 23 million articles and has around 365 million readers worldwide. Wikipedia is a totally free service. The articles in the site can be edited by anyone. Wikipedia is funded by its readers around the world.
