How to Take a Screenshot in Microsoft Windows

Let's see how to take a screenshot in your Windows PC. Screenshots are also referred as screen grab and print screen. We will be using two methods for taking screenshots. The first method is the old method which makes use of the Print Screen key in the keyboard and the second method uses the Windows 'Snipping Tool'. The first method works in any version of Windows but the second method works in Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate, Windows Vista editions except Starter and Home Basic.

Method 1: Using Print Screen

This method is applicable for all versions of Microsoft Windows.

1. Navigate to the window or page to be grabbed.

2. Press the Print Screen key in your keyboard.

Note: If you want to take the screenshot of just one window make sure the window is active (click on the window to make it active) and press Alt + Print Screen.

3. Now you have the screenshot in the cache.

4. To save it in your hard drive open Microsoft Paint.

5. Click the Paste icon on the top or just select Ctrl + V keys on your keyboard.

4. Now to save the image click Menu -> Save As option.

5. Enter a name in the Name field and select an image type (PNG, JPEG, GIF) from the Save as type field.

Method 2: Using Snipping Tool

This method is applicable for Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate, Windows Vista editions except Starter and Home Basic and for Windows 8.

1. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Snipping Tool.

2. In the Snipping Tool choose the kind of snip you would like to take. The default is Rectangular Snip.

Free-form Snip lets you to snip the area you draw.

Rectangular Snip allows you to snip rectangular areas.

Window Snip allows you to snip the active window.

Full-scree Snip acts pretty much like the Print Screen option.

3. Once you select a type of snip and an area to snip, a window pops up showing your snip.

4. Click the Floppy Disk icon to save the image.

5. Enter a name in the Name field and select an image type (PNG, JPEG, GIF) from the Save as type field.
